Gettysburg Battlefield Resort August Newsletter, 2024

“August was nearly over – the month of apples and falling stars, the last care-free month for the school children. The days were not hot, but sunny and limpidly clear – the first sign of advancing autumn.” ―Victor Nekrasov

August – when Summer tiptoes out the back door and fall knocks politely at the front gate. It is still summer as we write this, with its hot and humid weather, but inspiring long days at the pool, the sweet scent of sunscreen, as well as hand-dipped ice-cream. Yet, there are signs Autumn is approaching … Schools seem to start earlier every year, and with that comes team try-outs, practices, and start-of-school shopping to be done. Midweeks here are a bit quieter in August, especially as we approach the end of the month. The pool is a little less crowded, so adults doing laps do not have to dodge among the little ones swimming.  At night, the smokey perfume of campfires permeates the air, as well as golf carts moving about the park to visit friends old and new. Weekends remain full of families enjoying the last bit of summer. And activities crafts and games continue, with Friday night bingo or a movie, Saturday night entertainment, and Sunday morning tie-dye.

The first weekend in August we will be having our Game-On Weekend, with lots of things to do for young and old including a duck hunt! August 9-11^th is our Book and Science Fair Weekend, with STEAM activities and some great books to take home and read! Next is our Country Fair Weekend, full of carnival games, ribbons for Fair entries, a cake auction and Chris Woodward and concert. August 23-25^th is our GBR Goes Global Weekend, where we travel to different countries around the world. Lastly, is our Labor Day and Touch A Truck Weekend to round out the season!

As many of you know water has been an issue here at GBR. Conditions remain very dry here, and an unusually high heat index has made it very difficult for our wells to keep up with demand. Water conservation remains critical, so we are still limiting the number of bathrooms/showers opening, and the laundry room remains closed for the month of August.  In better news, a new well and increase in storage capacity is coming! Our staff greatly appreciates all the understanding members, and we will continue to strive to make your stay a fun one! See you soon!
